First

This piece is inspired by the poem “First They Came” by Martin Niemöller. The original tone was angry, fearful. It read “First, they came for the trans people. I spoke up immediately, even though I’m cis and straight, because I’ve read the rest of the fucking poem.”

As I worked, I became aware that I wasn’t seeking the self-preservation implied in the original poem. Instead, I was reflecting on how much we would lose if we didn’t have the joy, love, beauty, creativity, contributions, and intelligence of trans people, or of any kind and compassionate person.

“First” is now a tribute to my trans friends, and the joy, love, beauty, comfort, inspiration, and kindness those relationships bring to my life.
